Contextual Statement
Seth Neeley
M.Ed. Learning Design
I am always looking for ways to utilize my instructional design and educational technology skills at organizations which provide valuable services or substantial support to the surrounding community. A positive organizational goal and supportive work culture are important to my own personal satisfaction and well-being. I enjoy providing innovation to my organization while also continuing to learn and further developing my skills.
My educational background started with my Associate degree in Computer Networking and System Support. I have always had a great interest in technology, so this was a great starting point for future endeavors. I learned to adapt to changing technologies and developed a high aptitude for learning new software and understanding how to use specialized hardware to accomplish all kinds of tasks more efficiently. I worked for six years in various desktop support technician positions throughout Ohio and Michigan. It was my time working for Fremont City Schools, a K-12 school district, which enhanced the value I currently place on education. I knew that I wanted to find a way to combine my technology skills and passion for education, so I sought out a program to achieve that goal.
I completed a Bachelor in Advanced Technological Education, then immediately after, a Master of Education in Learning Design through Bowling Green State University. While working on my graduate degree, I taught English in Korea for a year. This has been my only professional teaching experience, but it was great to know what it's like to plan and teach lessons. Upon graduation, I started working as an Organizational Development Specialist at Lansing Community College. The position was in the Human Resources department and it focused on creating face-to-face and online training for college staff. I had the freedom to utilize creativity in making training modules which would be fun and engaging while teaching organizational policies. Since 2014, I have been working as an Instructional Designer at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. This position has introduced me to many new theories, techniques, and software packages which will be discussed in detail in the upcoming sections.
I will be returning to the US next year, after being abroad for several years. I plan to continue working in higher education, but I would like my next role to be a step above my current position. I feel I have the experience and knowledge to work in a more intermediate position with more administrative duties. Up to this point, I have changed jobs rather frequently, but I would like to settle into a good organization and provide lasting support while taking on more responsibility over time. CMALT will help me to prepare a proper online portfolio which can be showcased during my job search. It will also certify me professionally in regards to learning technology which will be an overdue addition to my purely technological certifications.
